The plight of Rizana Nafeek, the Sri Lankan young woman sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia, is primarily due to the lapses at the Foreign Employment Bureau, Labour and Foreign Ministry, says UNP parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake.
He made this statement while visiting the residence of Rizana Nafeek, at Shanthi Nagar in Muttur last morning to provide the family with financial assistance.
“When I met with the President recently, he said that he too would get involved at diplomatic level to resolve this problem.
“Subsequently, I saw through the media, that Prince Charles of England and Amnesty International too had got involved in the matter.
“We have good news. Concurrent to the upcoming Hajj festival, she could be granted a pardon so that she could come home to Sri Lanka. We eagerly anticipate this.
“People have to be educated at this point, that Rizana has met with this fate primarily because of the shortcomings at the Foreign Employment Bureau, Labour Ministry and the Foreign Ministry,” said MP Ramanayake.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB) Kingsley Ranawaka told Newsfirst that officials attached to the Immigration and Emigration Department and the CID were the only ones able to verify an individual's passport.
He further said that information has now come to light that the sub agent in question had made a false passport for Rizana.
Ranawaka said that legal action would be taken against the sub agent.
